You only see what your eyes want to see How can life be what you want it to be You're frozen When your heart's not open You're so consumed with how much you get You waste your time with hate and regret You're broken When your heart's not open
Trash
Calgary, Alberta, Canada. 7 Years ago, trapped in a room. She could hear him yelling. All sorts of horrible words and statements. Lies and slander. The tears were hot on her cheeks. Her hands trembled and Jade, barely a year old was crying in her crib. Sierras arms were wrapped around her legs as they were pulled to her chest. All the mistakes she’d made in her life rushed back in. The drugs, the drinking. Partying with friends and her boyfriend at the time. The father of her daughter.
Steven had been a dream. They met in high school, he had been nice to her, never laughing about her mixed heritage. Never telling her to “go south”. Steven had been her angel when they were teenagers. But now, in her early 20’s, a young child involved, Sierra had stopped drinking, stopped partying. And Steven hadn’t. Tonight Sierra had enough. Steven had gone out, he took his wallet and left, Sierra was exhausted. She had worked a twelve hour day, gone to the gym, her body ached. Her mind was broken….
But it didn’t matter to him. Steven had come from a rich white family. He didn’t have to work, he di9dn’t have to struggle. But Sierra was raised differently. She provided for Jade, she provided for herself and tonight was the straw that broke the camel's back. After he had left, Sierra locked the door, Steven never took keys with him, too much to lose. So he would always get Sierra to stay up and wait so she could let him in.
Tonight she kept the door locked.
Steven: ”Sierra?. SIERRA OPEN THE DOOR YOU BITCH”
Jade cried louder, Sierra turned finally hearing the cries and the yelling. She had tried to block it out but now Jade seemed in distress. She stood up picking up her daughter cradling her in her arms. Jade started to calm down as she felt her mother hold her. Steven was still pounding on the door, still yelling. Sierra took a deep breath kissing Jade on the forehead whispering to her.
Sierra: ”I’m sorry”
The door cracked. Sierra put Jade back down and stepped back, the door opened and Steven stood there shaking his head obviously angry, the smell of Whisky on his breathe as he stepped forward. Steven looked down at Jade who was now calm but still awake, he sneered and slammed the door pushing Sierra through the small living room to their bedroom, his hand wrapped around her upper arm squeezing it hard leaving red marks that would turn into bruises. He shoved her hard against the closet doors.
Sierra fell down and tried to pull herself up, Steven stood over her staring down in anger.
Steven: ”You locked me out bitch?. How dare you Sierra..”
Sierra: ”You’re drunk again…”
The words slipped out, they had venom and disgust behind them with some disappointment and sadness. Steven sneered. He looked menacing and ready to go. He had never struck Sierra before, he had never been angry enough to, but yelling, threats and rough handling had escalated. He stepped forward, his hand raised. Then they heard it, voices from outside in the hallway. Sierra's heart beat faster as two police officers stepped into the room, weapons drawn.
It all happened so fast, one moment Sierra was staring into the eyes of a man that she once loved, that was her teenage sweetheart. Now he had been pushed against the wall, one of the po9lice officers reading him his rights. The handcuffs locking shut and Sierra was sitting on the edge of her bed, the other officer asking her questions. She went on autopilot, answering what she could, trying to hold back more tears.
An hour later it was over, she had packed up the car ready to travel to her parents house.
The apartment was empty now. It was quiet, the door was still damaged and she just didn’t want to be there anymore. As she started her trip back home she realised maybe this was all for the best. And she was never going to let anyone step on her again. She was going to live her dreams, she was going to go back to wrestling, she was going to do her parents and her brothers proud. This wasn’t the end.
It was just the beginning.
She pulled up to her parents' house. It was about 3AM. She stepped out of the car and her father was there, waiting outside. He didn’t say anything, he didn’t need to. He just pulled his daughter forward giving her a kiss on the forehead. Sierra's mother smiled warmly taking Jade inside. Sierra started to grab her things, Oscar put his hand on her shoulder and turned her around leading to the house. ”That can wait till tomorrow” She sighed deeply stepping into the house, her mother was already sitting down slightly rocking back and forth trying to get Jade back to sleep.
The house was inviting, warm and calming. The second Sierra stepped into her old room, still looking the same with her posters of different bands, wrestlers and a Calgary Flames signed jersey in a frame she smiled. This was it. She was home….
A glorious car krash…
The christmas break had been good to Sierra. Time with her husband, her daughters, seeing her father, mother and siblings on Skype. It relaxed her, she was able to calm down and heel from a few nagging injuries. Her showing at Crusade had been good for her, it had reestablished her. But now we returned to the land of reality. A new year, ;first show, and a nagging feeling…
Sierra: “Crusade was a hit huh? So many people tuned in to watch the Pay per view to cap off an amazing year in Apex. A year that saw me debut, a year that saw Mack McKane rule over the company with an iron fist, a year that saw many ups and downs. But Crusade was a mission statement from the entire company. You want to watch a growing product with hard hitting action? You watch PWS Apex. And I mean that, I really do. See I believe in this company. I want to see it grow, I want to see some big names sign contracts and come here because we need the competition. That is how we grow and get better.”
“People like Shawn Young need that. See Shawn came face to face with me at Crusade and he thought he was going to put up a good fight. And while that is subjective and I’m sure in his mind he did do everything he could, the truth is Shawn lost from the second the bell rang and we started wrestling.”
“That might seem arrogant of me to say but I have been doing this long enough to know how a match feels in that instance. And the look in Shawns face, I got in his head and I beat him with words before we even touched.”
“So, yeah. Shawn needs fresh faces and challenges, much like myself.”
“But, as I said, I believe in PWS Apex. I just wish this goddamn company would return the favor and believe in me. See, I have been here for 8 months now, and with the exception of the match against Mack I have been dominating people in this company. I have been one of the best week in and week out yet I don’t get treated as such. Look at my match at Crusade. Shawn Young isn’t a name here, he’s barely a goddamn ripple in the pond yet here we go, throw Sierra in against him….”
She throws her hands in the air clearly frustrated, a black baseball cap turned backwards sits on her head, her red hair tied back as it flows down over a white and black vintage coca cola t shirt and torn black jeans
Sierra: “And that has continued into the new year. After my return and my wins, after the only real blemish against me being against the world champion do I get rewarded by facing any of the top names in this company? Do I get a one on one match against Cleo? Or any of the Russow boys? Do I get established names like Bella Madison or even Heather Haze? Or Miles Kasey? No….no of course not…”
“I get the kid who has had one match in PWS. A gatekeeper roll while the company focuses on Haze, Makarios and others. Meanwhile I just get thrown away….”
“It’s enough to make me fucking walk….it’s the reason why I walked from fucking SCW. I was not being appreciated for my talent and no matter what happened and who I was able to beat or the work I put in I just bang my fucking head on the glass ceiling. It took me winning a huge clusterfuck match to get my shot at Mack the first time and in a month of being back and proving how good I am I have yet to see the fruits of my labor. Instead I watch the same people doing the same things standing in the spotlight all because they know who to suck….”
“Up too…”
The deliberate pause speaks volumes as Sierra folds her arms over her chest, anger still pouring from every movement of her body language and her eyes.
Sierra: “And I want you all to realise, this isn’t a knock on Krash, he has no control over who he is booked against or why. And who knows, this 18 year old skinny kid with cool face paint might be the future of this company and the wrestling world in general. But what makes him think, or PWS Apex think he has earned the right to face me? So that begs the question, if this company sees me on the same level as an untried, untested kid, then am I wasting my time here?”
“Krash is a rookie, a young anomaly. He could come out and surprise me and beat me, he could stake his claim as a new star that can take this company by storm…”
“But I need to look after me….I need to worry about my career and my future…”
“And If I lose to Krash? Then PWS Apex and their booking of me will be validated and I will end up in booking hell. I will be used as a gatekeeper for all the new talents PWS think could be the future or a bust. And that isn’t my position. Krash will be another message that I send to the Apex management. He will be another bright shining fucking billboard that says Sierra Williams is not to be fucked with. The first show of the year needs a statement of intent and that is what Krash is going to be. And every single one of you is going to notice...and Mack McKane can’t run forever…”
