Last Rites
Immediately following the Collateral Damage title match
Mattie ran through the hallways, pushing past everyone to get to the gorilla position. Just as she arrived there, she saw Mack limping down the stairs, blood smeared across the lower part of his face and the Collateral Damage title in his hand. She ran to him, stopping in front of him and gently taking his face in her hands.
“How much of it did you watch?” he asked her.
“All of it.”
“All of it?”
She nodded. “From start to finish.”
“Well, what did you think? And don’t be afraid to be honest.”
“Honestly?” she said, as a proud smile appeared on her face. “You were incredible.” She gently kissed the bridge of his nose, both his cheeks and then lightly pecked his lips. “Now, let’s get you bandaged up and back to the hotel room. Yes, you’re staying in my room and I don’t want to hear any arguments,” she said as he opened his mouth to protest.
He just chuckled and shook his head as she put his arm around her shoulder to help support him. “Whatever you say, boss lady.”

Later that night
Once they finished with the doctor and gathered up their belongings, they made their way to the hotel that the talent had been staying in during their visit to Tokyo. The bruises were beginning to form across Mack’s face, and he received a few curious looks from the hotel staff, but neither he nor Mattie paid any mind to them as they headed to the elevators and up to her room. She unlocked the door and they stepped through, Mack getting an impressed look on his face as he looked at her rather lavish suite.
“Well, someone’s living it up,” he said.
“I’ve never been to Japan before, so I wanted to treat myself a little,” she admitted. She took his hand and led him over to the loveseat near the window, where they had a scenic view of downtown Tokyo. They sat quietly for a few moments, admiring the sparkling city lights before Mattie turned to look at him.
“What you did for me tonight-” she started to say, but Mack shushed her.
“Nope. We’re not talking about that right now.”
“But I need to. I need to let you know how much that meant to me.” She reached up, cupping his cheek gently with her hand. “I know you have yourself convinced that you’re some kind of irredeemable monster, but what you did tonight wasn’t something a monster would do. If you hadn’t got there when you did…” She trailed off, closing her eyes as she tried to fight back tears.
“I’m sorry,” Mack said, his voice breaking slightly as he wiped the tears from her cheeks. “I should have been there. If I hadn’t been such a colossal fuckin’ idiot, maybe this wouldn’t-”
Mattie shook her head, pressing a finger to his lips. “You’re here now, and that’s all that matters to me. Just shut up, and never let me go.”
He hugged her tightly to his chest. “Never again.”
They sat quietly together for a few moments, just holding each other. But soon, Mack had Mattie reclined underneath him on the loveseat, and they were kissing passionately. After a few moments, Mattie broke away, staring up at Mack and biting her bottom lip. “Um, before we get too carried away, I should probably tell you something…”
Mack brushed a lock of her hair away from her face. “You can tell me anything, you know that right?” He moved to sit up, and Mattie did the same.
“Well...I just thought...that is, I’ve never...done this...before,” she stammered, looking down and twisting her hands together in her lap nervously.
Mack blinked a few times, processing the information. “So...you're a...”
Mattie nodded, a bit bashful. “Yeah. I mean it wasn’t like I had guys throwing themselves at me or anything...but even if they had, I don’t think I would have done it. I knew that I wanted my first time to be with someone I really cared about.” She giggled nervously, toying with a strand of hair. “God, that sounds so cheesy, I know…”
“Course it don’t. But, are you sure you want this...with me?”
“Mack, I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life. But I don’t want to rush it. I want it to be something special. Besides, I don’t think you’re in any shape to do anything after the match you just had,” she said, smirking a little.
He returned the grin. “Much as I hate to admit it, you’re probably right.”
“In that case, we should probably get rested up. Alanah said something about going to Kobe tomorrow, and she’d have our asses if we were late.”
“Sounds like a plan to me,” Mack said, leaning in to give her a soft, lingering kiss.
When they pulled away, Mattie gave him a dreamy smile, resting her forehead against his. “I promise, when the time is right, I’ll let you know.”
“If I can be completely honest? I’m very much looking forward to it,” he said with a wink, earning a giggle from Mattie.
They got ready for bed, curling up beneath the covers with Mattie resting her head on Mack’s chest and him wrapping her up in his arms. They stayed up for a little while, talking softly until they both dropped off to sleep.

This field is so beautiful. So many flowers, in so many colours...as far as the eye can see. And not a cloud in the sky. It’s absolutely perfect.
But there’s just one thing missing…
Wait, there he is! Over there, in the distance!
Mack! Mack!
That’s strange. I’m yelling, but I can’t hear anything. And he’s not even looking at me. Maybe I should go over to him.
...wait, how come he keeps getting farther away? I’m running and running, but he never gets closer, even though he’s not moving...what’s going on?
This is so strange…
Wait, where did these gold bars come from?
...I’m inside a cage? A golden cage? I don’t understand…
Everett? What the hell are you doing here?
Why can I not speak? What the hell is going on?
Wait, what is he saying?
“You’re mine now, pretty little bird. All locked up in this cage. Just for me to enjoy whenever I want.”
No. NO!
This can’t be happening!
MACK PLEASE!
...he’s looking! He’s looking!
Please help me!
No, don’t...please don’t walk away!
Mack…
...please....

She woke with a start, sitting straight up in the bed and rubbing her eyes until the images from her dream had faded away. It was still dark, and a glance at the clock showed her that it was a quarter past three. It took her a moment to realize where she was, and she looked to the other side of the bed...which was empty.
She let out a soft sigh, running a hand through her tangled hair. Why did I even let myself hope? she thought sadly, bringing her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. But then, her ears caught the sound of running water coming from the bathroom, and she looked over as the door opened and Mack stepped out. He saw her sitting up in bed and made his way over to her. “Everything alright, love?” he asked, brushing a wayward curl of hair off of her forehead.
She reached up to gently trail her fingers along his cheek, and he leaned into her touch, bringing his hand up to cover hers. When she was satisfied that he was really there with her and it wasn’t just a trick of her imagination, she smiled and curled up against his chest, resting her head over his heart. “Perfect,” she said.
Mack smiled, maneuvering them so that they were laying back down on the bed. He pulled the blanket up over them, and kissed Mattie on her forehead. Soon, they had both drifted back off to sleep.
