-When Angels Fall
”When angels fall with broken wings.
I can’t give up, I can’t give ins
When all is lost and daylight ends.
I’ll carry you, and we will live forever.”

Chapter One - Fallen Angel
(The scene opens with Daniel and Audrey getting out of the car. Dan walks over to Audrey’s side of the car and opens the door. She gets out with a smile as he puts an arm around her.)
Daniel Russow: You ready for this?
Audrey Russow: You’ve talked him up so much I’m actually pretty nervous. I hope he likes me.
Daniel Russow: I know he’s going to love you. As much as I’ve talked him up to you, I’ve done the same for you to him.
Audrey Russow: I love you.
Daniel Russow: Love you too, angel.
(They walk into the church with smiles on their faces. The smiles slowly start to fade when another priest, other than who they came to see, approaches them with a somber expression on his face.)
Priest: Daniel...and his must be Audrey?
Daniel Russow: Yes it is. I finally brought her to meet father Dominick.
(The priest lets out a long sigh, as he motions to one of y’all he pews.)
Priest: Do you mind having a seat?
Daniel Russow: Uh...okay…
Priest: Please…
(Daniel looks at Audrey, as she gives a shrug then a nod, and they take a seat. The priest take a seat next to Daniel and folds his hands.)
Priest: we did t have any way to contact you, I’m so sorry to be the one to tell you this….
;any expression of happiness or joy is completely removed from Daniel’s face. It is completely replaced with worry and dread.)
Daniel Russow: Wh- tell me what?
Priest: Well, as you know, Dominick was the most kind-hearted individual and tried to help anyone he could.
Daniel Russow:...what happened?
(The priest looks up at Daniel, and it’s at this time Daniel can see the tears forming in the priest’s eyes.)
Priest: There...there was an incident the other night. Dominick was here, and he was getting things ready to head. Home. This church isn’t in the best of neighborhoods…
Daniel Russow:...what happened?
Priest:..There was a car, we think it was gang activity, as it has been a thing in the area…
Daniel Russow:...what...happened?
Priest: The car did a drive-by shooting. The police say it must have been a gang initiation. It was a semi.automatix rifle...Dominick didn’t stand a chance.
(The last words fall off the priest’s lips, and echo in Daniel’s mind. The world around him stops, and a feeling of numbness engulfs him. He doesn’t even feel Audrey squeezing onto him. He sits there, not knowing what to think or say.)
Priest: I’m so sorry Daniel.
Daniel Russow: They said gang activity?
Priest: The police said there’s been a string of similar situations in the area. Dominick was a beloved figure in the community, so the police said unfortunately that made him a possible target for a statement to be near.
Daniel Russow: When did this happen?
Priest: A few nights ago.
Daniel Russow:...which night?
Priest: Monday night, around 7 at night.
(Daniel sits there stoic and frozen. Audrey looks at him and sees his eyes starting to well up.)
Audrey Russow: Babe?
(Daniel slowly turns his head to her, and now she sees the complete look of heartbreak and brokenness in his eyes, as nowthe tears are starting to stream down his face.)
Daniel Russow:...I...I was supposed to come meet him on Monday night...he was here because he was waiting for me…
Audrey Russow: Daniel…
Daniel Russow: He should have been home…
Audrey Russow: Daniel...please...don’t s
Daniel Russow:...I...I need some air.
(Daniel quickly stands up and walks outside. Audrey stands up and goes to chase after him. Before she turns to the priest.)
Audrey Russow: I’m sorry. Thank you for telling us.
Priest: Daniel was very special to Dominick. He talked about him quite a lot. There were a number of times he said he viewed Daniel as a son. Please go ensure he’s okay. I’ll be here.
(Audrey makes her way out of the church to find Daniel sitting outside on the steps. His face is buried in his hands, and she can hear him crying from where she stands. It takes her aback for a moment. She’s never seen him this upset, this broken, this hurt. She slowly walks over and sits down beside him, wrapping her arms around him and holding him tight as he wails. He takes a moment, then keeps his face buried in his hands as he speaks in a completely heartbroken tone.)
Daniel Russow: Th-the last time I...the last time I saw him, I raised my voice at him…my God he was just trying to help me and I yelled at him...
Audrey Russow: I’m sure he knew you didn’t mean to babe.
Daniel Russow: I did, though. He was going on about how I should reconnect with my father. How I shouldn’t keep our daughter from knowing the only grandparent she will have.
Audrey Russow: I know that’s a sore subject for you.
Daniel Russow: It’s not just that..I yelled at him for even suggesting it. Told him I want nothing to do with my father, as far as I’m concerned I don’t have one. He tried to say how family was so important, throw it in my face how I put so much importance in family. I told him you and my brothers and their families are the only family I need….I...he was the closest thing to a father I’ve ever had…
(Daniel breaks down again. Audrey tried to console him, but by this point it’s nearly impossible.)
Daniel Russow: He was an angel….the first time I came here and saw him...I told about him about everything...he never passed judgement...he...he fuckin prayed for me...for us.
Audrey Russow: He loves you. The priest was just telling me he saw you as a son.
Daniel Russow: I never got to tell him thank you…
Audrey Russow: He knew how you felt. You have walls but deep down you are a kind hearted man. You showed that to him...you show that to me. I have no doubt you will show that to our daughter.
(Daniel slowly raises his face from his hands. He looks at the ground but kinda turns his head towards Audrey.)
Daniel Russow/ I honestly appreciate what you’re trying to do…but not right now.
Audrey Russow/ I know you and I don’t want you beating yourself up for this.
Daniel Russow: Oh I’m crucifying myself as we speak….
(Daniel goes to bury his hands back in his face, but Audrey takes her hands and raises his face up, caressing it and forcing him to look at her.)
Audrey Russow: This is not your fault Daniel. Everything happens for a reason.
Daniel Russow: But why him? Why Joshua? Do you know the horrible things I’ve done in my life yet two angels like them are the ones who are gone and I’m still fuckin’ here.
Audrey Russow/ Youre here because you’re meant to be here. You were meant to be here for me. You were meant to be there with me when I lost my parents. I’m meant to be here with you when you lost Joshua...and I’m meant to be with you here now.
Daniel Russow: I don’t deserve you.
Audrey Russow: After my parents died...you brought me back to life...Dan I was broken and you picked me back up...you put me back together. You saved my life so don’t you dare say you don’t deserve me. Any happiness I bring you is repayment for you saving me. We are in this together. I love you Daniel Russow.
Daniel Russow: I love you too…
(The two remain in this position for a few minutes as the scene fades.)
