June 12 Manhattan, New York
“WHAT?!”
Lachlan winced at the sound of his sister’s voice reverberating through her apartment as the very visibly pregnant Alanah O’Connell-Russow stared at her older brother, brown eyes wide and her mouth agape. Beside her on the couch, their brother Malachi was in a similar state of shock, though his face wasn’t nearly as comically arranged as hers. Still, Lachlan took the clench of his jaw and the narrowing of his blue eyes as a sign that he was not pleased either.
“Sierra and I are moving down to Orlando. Alex is opening up a new branch of Wolfslair there, and he wants us to be the lead trainers there,” the eldest O’Connell started, clasping his hands together between his knees. “This is a huge opportunity for me. I feel like I’ve hit a plateau here in New York. Alex is giving me a chance to help shape the future of the business.”
“But why Orlando?” Alanah said, her lower lip trembling slightly. “That’s so far away, Lachy…” Her eyes drifted down to her fingers in her lap, twisting together nervously.
He got out of his chair and kneeled down in front of her, taking her hands gently in his and giving her a smile. “Hey, listen. I promise you that Sierra and I will be here when the babies come. You really think I’m going to miss the birth of my first niece and nephew?”
Alanah sniffled a little, a few tears running down her cheeks. “But what if something happens? What if they come early, and you can’t get here in time?”
Reaching up to brush her tears away with the back of his hand, Lachlan cupped her chin in his hand and tilted her face up so that they were looking each other in the eye. “Hey, when have I ever let you down? If I say I’m gonna be here, I will be. You know that.”
Though there were still some tears in her eyes, Alanah gave him a small smile and reached her arms out to hug him around the neck. He returned the hug (gently, being mindful of her protruding stomach) before turning his focus to his brother. “You’ve been conspicuously silent, Mal. I know you have some thoughts about all of this.”
Mal let out a sigh, running a hand through his hair. “I mean, we finally have the whole family back together in the same city for the first time in years, and now you’re running off on us again.”
Lachlan frowned slightly. “Look, this isn’t like Japan-”
Mal held up a hand to stop him mid sentence. “Lach, it’s fine. I know this is a big opportunity for you and Sierra, and I’m happy for you guys. I promise, I won’t follow you down there and clock you in the head with a steel chair.”
There was a beat of surprised silence, before Lachlan let out a chuckle and shook his head. Mal followed with a laugh of his own, and with a little prodding Alanah giggled behind her hand before putting an arm around Mal’s shoulders and pulling her two brothers in for a hug.

June 27 Wolfslair Gym New York
He wandered through the Wolfslair gym, empty save for him at this time of night. He knew that this wouldn’t be the last time he would be in here, but it would be quite a while. Still, a sense of longing settled in the pit of his stomach, thinking of the past few months he had spent there. He smiled fondly when he walked up to the ring, remembering a particularly grueling training session with Miles Kasey that ended up with the two men laid out in the centre of the ring convinced they were dying, with an unamused Alex Jones shaking his head over them (though a wry smile was on his face as well).
He leaned his arms against the bottom rope as the nostalgia trip evaporated in his mind, and his thoughts turned to the future. Not just his imminent move to Orlando with his family, but his upcoming match in PWS on Tuesday night. His first proper match in two months, not counting the disaster that befell him before he could compete at Destiny. To say that he wasn’t a little apprehensive would have been a lie, as he still had no idea who had blindly attacked him in his locker room before Destiny. The perpetrator was still at large, but he pushed all that to the back of his mind as his clear blue eyes focused in on the camera following him around to film his promotional video for the upcoming Riot show.
“So, back at it again. First time stepping into a ring in over two months. Course, I should be standing here as the Destination Next winner…” His sentence trailed off as he gave a shrug of his shoulders, though his gaze turned a little bitter. “But whatever. There will be other opportunities in my future. For right now, I’m focused on the new path that my family is about to undertake, both professionally and personally.”
He pushed off from the bottom rope, only to climb up onto the ring apron and step between the ropes. He stood in the centre of the ring, dressed in a white T-shirt and dark jeans with Vans sneakers adorning his feet. In the dim lighting of the darkened gym, the shadows cast Lachlan as an imposing figure, while the expression on his face remained carefully neutral. “I’ll spare you the details, but I will say that they have no bearing on my focus and determination coming into my match this coming Tuesday night. Having been sidelined for the last few weeks has left me a little...pent-up, and I’m looking to get a few things out of my system when I step into the ring again. And by the looks of things, I’ll be facing off against the...unique Miss Puppies.”
A wry grin broke the neutral expression as he chuckled, rubbing a hand down his bearded chin. “First time I’ve gotten the pleasure of stepping into the ring with one of PWS’ more colourful characters, and I’m sure she’s gonna be a real test for my comeback. She’s a tough cookie, and by no means am I taking her lightly. But it’s been proven time and time again that when I’ve got something to prove, I damn sure go out there and prove it. And come this Tuesday night, I’m going out there to prove that no matter how many times people think they can take me out, I just keep coming back stronger and better than before. So, I sincerely hope that whoever jumped me back at Destiny is watching this match closely, because once I’m done with Puppies, I’m tracking you down and taking you out.”
His eyes narrowed dangerously towards the camera as he raised a hand towards the lens, fixing his fingers in a pistol shape before the last bit of light in the gym cut out suddenly to plunge the scene into darkness.
